Start with something that's already a proven success somehow, and your chances of making that money back increase before one inch of film is shot. It's not uncommon to hear movie fans cry on and on about how there's no originality left, but they're usually the first ones to approach the dark horses with extreme caution. "The Men Who Stare at Goats" is a weird movie, and is a great example of what star power really can do.
Ewan McGregor plays Bob Wilton (based on real-life author Jon Ronson), a reporter who deliberately travels to wartime Iraq looking for some kind of story.
There, he finds Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), a former psychic soldier for the U.S. Army. Referring to himself as a "Jedi Knight," Lyn quickly bonds with Bob and shares information regarding the military program that trained him, and the super-secret mission he's currently on. Either Lyn is completely nuts, or Bob has stumbled on the journalistic opportunity of a lifetime. But will he make it out of Iraq to report the story?
